Follow Focus - Under 5 Bucks

I found an article online about a DIY follow focus for the 5d.   I took the idea and made some improvements.

I made a trip to home depot today and found the supplies.

I used a self tightening ring found in the plumbing isle.  I grabed a few sizes, the largest size works best with the L series lenses.  I headed to the nuts and bolts isle and grabbed a 4" Eye Bolt with a few nuts to tighten.  I used a high density foam tape as a protective shield on the inside of the metal ring to prevent over tightening.

At home, i took some metal clippers and cut open two of the notches in the metal ring for the bolt to fit in.
I used some metal super glow in the inside of the bolts to prevent loosening.

Here is a few photos of the finished Follow Focus.

Effen Vodka 30 Second Spot

I wrote this concept a few weeks back, after presenting a rough idea to Brian Gannon, we both sat down and wrote the final draft. After finalizing the script, Brian and myself began location scouting. We knew that we needed a grocery store, after a few days of searching and shooting a bunch of test footage, we found a jewel that worked great! We knew we had no longer than 30 mins in the store before we would have to much attention on us.

The day of shooting, Brian and myself walked through the script with the Burg family. We knew if we could get them off book and comfortable with their characters before hand, then the location shoot would go quick. We managed to finish all the primary filming in jewel in under 50 minutes without being asked to leave.

For the past 2 weeks, Brian has been working on the edit at whitehouse post. There has been an overwhelming amount positive response by the editors and producers at whitehouse.

7 for all mankind: Commercial Spec Project

I wrote and concept this idea to create a commercial spot for 7 jeans.  I wanted it to be very cool, fast paced but timelessly romantic.  It needed to feel real when the viewer watched it.

We shot this piece on monday night, with a very tight schedule spanning over 4 locations around chicago. We had the first shot in the bag at 7:15pm and wrapped at 10:30pm.  The following day, the spot was cut and color was done at night.  Within 48hours, the spot was complete and online.

We shot the spot with the Canon 5D mkII with Canon EOS glass. 50mm1.2, 16-35mm2.8, and 70-200mm2.8IS.  We shot everything on zacuto gear including the rapid fire and zfinder v2.

I Survived Gary Indiana - Gorila Shoot

Today we filmed in Gary, Indiana.  We wanted to document the deconstruction of the city in a way that glamorized its ruins.  In order to capture this vision, we scouted the town for a few hours both looking for 2 perfect location along with surveying the streets to avoid any trouble.  Our First location was off the main street in a destroyed factory,  we could not figure out how this building came to it's demise.  The old factory seemed to be destroyed by mother nature, but we could not be sure.  The 2nd location was right off the main street, lucky enough it was near the Gary Police Station.  We were told by a Security guard at the entrance to the steel factory that the police try to keep to themselves because when they are on patrol, they find themselves to be the main shooting target.  This was clearly information that did not improve our confidence in a city that already seemed over run by the people.

I am attaching a few screen shots of the film since we are still logging the footage.  The Short will be up soon!

Canon 5d mkII - Night Time Digital Noise Test

We all know the 5d is a killer tool for filmmakers to create stunning works of art.  It has transformed the industry and has allowed someone who does not have the budget to shoot 35mm or Red to translate their creative vision into something real.  No more running around in circles trying to get our cameras to create a 35mm look only to create something far from what we first envisioned.

This is my first of many tests that will put the 5d through its paces.  Everyone and their grandmas have shot their 5d at night, we all know it has some noise but all in all, it is superb!  This Video was shot with the Canon 50mm 1.2L and the 70-200 2.8L is.

The 50mm 1.2L was able to shoot at 500 ISO, proving to be the best lens for Night Shooting!
